Aside from the racial diversity being represented in Steel, the movie also gives a disabled character a significant role in the movie. Annabeth Gish plays Steel’s right-hand woman, always talking in his ear, keeping him safe, and giving him the best tech she can find. It’s a prominent role, and one that also lets her get in on the action when some special modifications to her wheelchair are revealed. Sure, it would have been infinitely better if an actual disabled actress got the role, but 1997 hadn’t learned those lessons yet.

The Pitch: Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a silent film star who finds his career threatened by the transition to “talkies.” When his new film with his frequent movie partner and arrogant diva Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) bombs at the test screening, they decide to rework it as a musical, but there’s only one problem: Lina can’t sing. They hire Kathy (Debbie Reynolds), a beautiful young aspiring actress and Don’s new beau, to record over her voice, but the ruse can only be kept up for so long.

Yesterday at the Disney Parks Blog, it was revealed that there will be not one, but two new nighttime spectaculars: one at the Magic Kingdom and one at Epcot. Over at the Magic Kingdom, starting on October 1 (the actual 50th anniversary of the overall resort), they’ll kick things off with “Disney Enchantment,” which will feature music (duh), fireworks (double duh), screen projections (triple duh), and will inspire “everyone to believe in magic”. Yes, even all you parents and relatives who have been dragged along on the Disney World trip begrudgingly. Even you will believe in magic when this show is over! That’s the rule.
It only took 25 films, but Pixar has finally handed the keys to a female director. Turning Red, the upcoming Pixar animated film which will reportedly bring the animation giant back to theaters, will be written and directed by Domee Shi, the filmmaker behind the beautiful 2018 short film Bao. While we’re still a ways away from seeing footage from the 2022 movie, Pixar has gone ahead and released some concept art for the movie, which follows a young girl who transforms into a giant red panda. You know, as one does. |
